Getting sleep is vital to keep your body functioning properly. It is important to consider the quality of sleep over the quantity. The better sleep you have the more relaxed you will be the next day and the less anxious you will be.

1. Make sure you are not going to bed thinking that you have to go to sleep. This puts pressure on your mind and the more you think about sleeping the harder it will be for you to sleep. Go to bed thinking if sleep comes, well and good, if it doesn’t it really doesn’t matter.

2. 20 minutes before going to sleep drink a cup of Chamomile tea. Chamomile tea has a natural sedative which relaxes the muscles and eases of your brain. You can also use it during the day to ease your anxiety. But, make sure you don’t drink more than 4 cups a day as your body might get drowsy.

3. Distract yourself before sleeping. Reading fiction is a great way to keep your mind from thinking about sleeping. Fiction also engages the left side of your brain and keeps you from worrying and analyzing which is the function of the right side of the brain. Make sure it’s a light fiction, if it’s too interesting then you might not be able to put the book down. If you are not into reading, you can just start watching TV before going to sleep. If you fall asleep on the couch, tell your partner in advance not to wake you up.

4. Take a bath before going to sleep. Use lavender oil in the bath. This helps your muscles relax and produces calming effect which assist in sleeping.

5. Avoid Caffeine or alcohol before sleep.  Both of them are stimulants and will make it harder for you to sleep. A warm cup of milk before sleep on the other hand will help you in going to sleep.

6. Get plenty of exercise during the day. If your body is tired by night, you will automatically go to sleep. Make sure you don’t exercise 3 hours before sleep.

During Insomnia, sleep is just like your partner in a relationship, the more you go after it the more it will run away, but once you start ignoring it, it will come by itself.
