Doctors are generally not that well informed about panic attacks and anxiety disorders. Sometimes it’s because they are not an expert on the subject or haven’t had much experience in it.
Sadly, most people who have a panic attack go to their doctors for advice. Although it is recommended that you get a check up with a physician to check if you have a physical illness or not, once you are sure that it was a panic attack, you should take their advice with a grain of salt.
This is because many doctors make such claims and accusations, that they end up hurting the chances of a full elimination of the panic attack. And in addition, the traditional treatment for treating panic attacks is medication and anti-depressants which are not helpful at all in treating the attacks. All these medications do is make your mind numb to the feeling.
Many times, panic attacks and anxiety disorders are referred to as Mental illness.
IT IS NOT!!
Mental illness is something that cannot be cured by therapies alone. It always requires some type of drugs or medicine to work with it. It is impossible to cure a Mental illness without medication.
But Panic Attacks, Panic Disorder, and other Anxiety disorders can be treated without medicines. In fact, medicines sometimes make it harder to completely cure Anxiety Disorders.
Besides medicines (which end up causing more harm than good), there are also some old Panic Attack treatment methods that are not as effective as they can be.
1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy works on understanding the thoughts patterns of an individual and exposing the sufferer to the fearful situations that causes the phobia.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy has proven to be very effective in many cases of anxiety disorders including panic disorder.
In case of panic attacks without agoraphobia, the sufferers can be treated by just identifying and changing the thoughts pattern that are responsible for anxiety.
The only thing that is not so effective about these therapies is because they happen only once or twice a week. The pattern of repetition is not embedded in the brain (Amygdala) as fast as it can be done.
To be fully effective, a person should have a set of rules and system to follow along all the time. This is the reason why I recommend Panic Away, which provides you with a system that you always follow. And since this system is always with you, you reverse anxiety disorder in the same way it was developed, completely curing panic attacks.
2. Exposure Therapy – In this therapy, the sufferer is exposed to their fear in a controlled environment. This way they learn that the situation isn’t that dangerous and they slowly eliminate the phobia.
Agoraphobia is usually treated this way.
Exposure Therapy is also a very effective way to treat phobias and the sufferers slowly master their fears and take control of their lives again. But since it is done in a controlled environment, it takes some time to completely eliminate the fear. And that only happens when the sufferer actually faces their phobia in an uncontrolled environment.
3. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy – Psychodynamic Psychotherapy works by helping the victims understand the root cause of the panic attacks. Understanding their deepest emotions and trying to find out what is it that is causing anxiety.
The reason why this therapy is frowned upon by many experts is because this treatment implies that their is something wrong with the sufferer.
This is a demoralizing factor which leads to less confidence in the treatment process. When someone experiences a panic attack, they end up asking themselves questions such as
“Is there something wrong with me?”
“Am I going crazy?”
“Do I have a Mental illness?”
And Psychodynamic Psychotherapy only bolsters these doubts in the sufferers mind. It is true that most of the time panic attacks are caused by your own vicious cycle of anxious thoughts, but trying to find a deeper cause for panic attack will only increase your doubts and decrease your confidence.
And to completely cure panic attacks, one of the most important things you need is confidence. You need to stop blaming yourself and stop thinking that it is something that you can’t handle.
Traditional Methods for treating panic attacks have worked for a lot of people, but there are methods that work a lot faster and are much more effective in completely eliminating panic and anxiety from your life. One of the most well known systems and the one I recommend is Panic Away.
